Death of five persons in drag race SC to take up suo motu case tomorrow
F.P. Report ISLAMABAD: A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary would take up tomorrow a suo motu case regarding death of five persons in drag race held in Rawalpindi. The other members of the bench would be Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani. It is pertinent to mention here, during the car race in Bahria Town, Rawalpindi one of the racers could not control his car and hit spectators, resulting in the death of five persons of three families. The car’s driver had fled away. On last hearing of the case the bench had ordered Punjab police to arrest all the accused of recent drag race held in Rawalpindi wherein five people were killed when a competitor lost control over a car and ran into the crowd and submit a report before the court. The court noted that prima facie it indicates that without the blessing of police it was not possible for the organisers to hold the event. The court also expressed displeasure over investigation of the case with an observation that a perusal of the case indicates that there is no progress so far and police have even no knowledge of the participants of the race. Imdad Ullah Bosal, DCO Rawalpindi informed the bench that he had ‘refused’ to allow the organizers to hold the event. The PTCL is also among those institutions organising the race as Atif Sheikh had applied for an NOC. Similarly, DIG special branch had also denied permission for the race. However, it was CPO Rawalpindi Fakhar Sultan, who issued security plan for the event and the race took place. The DCO further stated that Safdar Salim Ullah had told his staff that the venue of the race had been changed from Rawalpindi to Islamabad. However, the race was held at Bahria Town, the court was told.
